Russia’s war against Ukraine has inflicted widespread devastation on Ukraine, presenting an urgent need for extensive reconstruction. Recognizing this challenge as an opportunity for transformative change, there is a growing call to pursue a “green” approach to reconstruction that extends beyond focusing solely on energy and construction matters, encompassing broader consideration for a sustainable economic development including biodiversity, climate, social factors, and market dynamics. What does this mean exactly and what does green reconstruction shall mean in general for Ukraine? This briefing paper tries to provide answers by presenting its benefits and certain recommendations for a comprehencive green recovery.

The Environmental Compact for a green future of Ukraine — published last week by the Ukrainian government — formulatedamong many others similar recommendations for a green reconstruction.
