Eco-Education Programs as an Investment in the Future

Project News

Environmental education allows individuals to explore environmental issues and connect with their surroundings. It serves as an investment in the future of conservation, while also aiming to enrich the lives of children in the present.

The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) supports environmental education programs in 12 Protected Areas in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The FZS environmental education team recently completed a study tour of particular German protected areas which excel in environmental education and transferred their learnings to the employees of Carpathian protected areas through two-day seminars held on-site in the Carpathians.

These seminars provided a productive platform for discussing challenges, exploring potential solutions, and generating new ideas.  The new ideas are being further developed and compiled into a resource base which will consist of lesson plans focused on experiential outdoor learning.

These programs will then be fully supported with the required materials and operational support to make them a success in the field.  This resource will continue to grow and evolve over time, incorporating new ideas based on the ever-growing experiences of the PA staff in the field.

The Ukrainian Carpathians are strongholds for primeval and old-growth forests in Europe, but face pressure from large scale logging. Protected areas (PAs) in these forests now also face an acute existential threat as government funding has all but ceased as a result of the economic pressures stemming from the Russian invasion.
